Otoplasty (Ear Surgery, Ear Pining, Ear Re-Shaping)
Ears, like the nose, are often a source of insecurity, whether from natural growth or injury. Oftentimes, prominent or congenital ears can distract from other features of the face. Ear lobes can begin to hang too low due to earrings or genetics, ultimately resulting in split lobes. Whatever your needs may be, ear reshaping and/or pining gives your ears the appearance you want and the confidence you deserve.
For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four to 14. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.
If you are considering ear surgery for yourself or your child, this information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure: when it can help, how it's performed and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances.

Preparation Before Your Procedure

The Evening Before Your Procedure
The evening prior to your surgery, please refrain from eating or drinking anything including water. Please do not smoke, and check with Dr. Oser regarding any medication that you are taking regularly.
The Day of Your Procedure
Please refrain from wearing makeup, contact lenses, hairpins, jewelry, body lotion or perfume. Wear comfortable clothing. If you develop a cold, sore throat, fever or any symptoms of illness before your surgery, notify the office.
Please prepare to have a responsible adult available to provide transportation after your procedure and have arrangements made for any necessary assistance you may require for the following 24 hours. If you are a minor, a parent or guardian must accompany you.
Recovery
Just as everyone is an individual, everyone recovers differently. Elevate your head to decrease the swelling. Do not lie on your sides for seven to ten days after surgery. Sleep on a soft pillow or a foam pillow. If you wear glasses, modify the temple pieces of the glasses to avoid putting pressure on your ears.
Do not remove the dressings. Dr. Oser or staff will do this three to five days after surgery. Once the dressings are removed, avoid pulling on the stitches or bending the ear forward.
Wear a headband over the ears for six to eight weeks after surgery when sleeping or during sports activities, and whenever possible. The more you wear the headband; the more likely you will have a better result.
Results
Patients typically enjoy a more anatomical and pleasing appearance. Ear reshaping allows other features of the face to be noticed allowing for a more balanced face and an overall increase in self-confidence.
